Double blow for Australia

(Beijing, April 21) Australia suffered a double blow today in the "Good Luck Beijing" CNPC 2008 Women's Basketball International Invitational Tournament as they lost 60-52 to Cuba and starter Suzy Batkovic was injured and pulled out in the Aussies' second consecutive loss.

Both teams finished with 1W-1L in last two days and world No. 2 suffered a 67-64 defeat to China yesterday.

Yakelyn Plutin Tizon of Cuba scored game high 22 points and had 12 rebounds. Yayma Boulet Peillon connected on 15 points in the win.

Hollie Grima was the only one Australian reaching double figures today, 10. Following Grima were Natalie Porter (9), Renae Camino (7) and Suzy Batkovic (6).

Cuba hit 15 out of 20 from the line while Australia earned only three free throws and made 2.

After leading 15-11 in the first quarter, Cuba established a ten-point advantage at the half time, 33-23. The second quarter saw Yakelyn Plutin Tizon of Cuba playing aggressively in the paint.

Australia fought back in the third but Suzy Batkovic injured her wrist with eight minutes remaining in the period. Cuba seized the opportunity to maintain its lead into the fourth quarter.

Australia cut the Cuba's lead to 56-52 with less than one minute left in the game and it was Yakelyn Plutin Tizon coming out strong again. She hit four clutch free throws to help Cuba win the match 60-52.
