Cuba holds off Korea 78-66

(Beijing, April 24) Cuba clinched a berth in the top four by beating Korea 78-66 this afternoon in the "Good Luck Beijing" CNPC 2008 Women's Basketball International Invitational Tournament.

Cuba lost to China 66-58 yesterday while Korea was defeated by Australia by a small margin of 78-71.

Yakelyn Plutin Tizon scored a game-high of 24 points and tore down 12 rebounds and Yayma Boulet Peillon also gained a double-double of 18 points and 17 boards in the win for Cuba, who finished with 3W-2L in the round robin games.

Kim Jung Eun led the Koreans with 14 points while Choi Youn Ah added 10 in the defeat for Korea, who suffered three consecutive losses and ended with 1W-4L.

Cuba outrebounded Korea 50-29 and made 22 out of 25 from the free throw line.

Yakelyn Plutin Tizon's aggressive inside play lifted Cuba to a 21-15 lead after the first quarter. Korea came closer on Kim Jung Eun's fast breaks, trailing 38-34 at half time. Cuba maintained the cushion after three periods and made it 78-66 for the win.
