(Beijing, 24 April ) - Comments from coach Mike McHugh (NZL), Angela Marino (NZL), Noni Wharemate (NZL), Natalie Porter (AUS) and Emma Randall (AUS)following their game against Australia at the Beijing Olympic Basketball Gymnasium.
Mike McHugh (NZL) - Coach
On the reasons of the victory of this game:
"We played very good defence as they used to be the world champion."
On what he said before the game to encourage his players:
"You know that Australia and us are close neighbor. Our players are usually willing to play against Australia. We have been working a lot on this game."
On the game against Korea the day after tomorrow:
"Korea is a very very good team. They are quicker than us, but we slowed down Australia and we can do the same against Korea the day after tomorrow. This is a great tournament and we met the best teams in the world. Today's game gave us a lot of confidence to face the game the day after tomorrow."
Angela Marino (NZL) - Guard
On performance in the first half:
"Actually we played very well. We just had some defensive struggles. I am very happy that we ended up beating them. I think this is the first time we've beaten Australia."
On improvement in the second half:
"We just played hard. This was a really good game. It was just to play good defence."
On her scoring fewer points in the latest two games:
"The defence was really pressing me. I tried to make other teammates score more points. But I don't care. If we win, it doesn't matter."
Noni Wharemate (NZL) - Guard/Forward
On her feel after this exhausted game:
"I feel great. Actually we have had some disappointed moments in this tournament. We really want to play well in this match. The Australian team is very physical and so much bigger than us, and they are very good at rebounds. So we worked very hard against it, and we are quite satisfied with the result."
On NZL team's performance in the first half of low scores:
"Maybe it's because we focus too much on defence and we didn't pay much attention to balls. We passed lots, but we didn't scored very much. Then we decided we must be more focused and make the best of ourselves."
Natalie Porter (AUS) - Centre
On your biggest problems in this game:
"Just put the ball in the hole. The shooting percentage is 25% which is not good. We have a lot of shots, but we missed£¬and a lot of turnovers."
On the low shooting percentage:
"It's really bad. We just need more practice."
Emma Randall (AUS) - Forward
On the team's performance today:
"We shot the ball poorly, which is the main factor that we lost. We didn't play good enough."
On strategies made during the timeout in the last few seconds:
"We tried some strategies but they didn't go as planned. We didn't get it done."
