(Beijing, April 25) New Zealand, who had lost four games in a row, captured its first win in the "Good Luck Beijing" CNPC 2008 Women's Basketball International Invitational Tournament, beating Australia 63-59 in the final round robin match last night.
Prior to this match, Australia had ended a two-game losing streak by defeating Korea 78-71 the day before while New Zealand had fallen in all the four preliminary matches after losing to USA 78-60.
Jilian Harmon posted a double-double with game high 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Angela Marino was the other New Zealand player reaching double figures, 12 points.
Rohanee Cox scored 12 points while Natalie Porter added 10 in the loss for Australia, who finished with 2W-3L after yesterday's match.
Australia outrebounded New Zealand 43-36, but made only 30 percent shooting from the field. The match was plagued by unforced errors as each team had 22 turnovers.
Australia led 13-11 after the first quarter and maintained its advantage at the half time 27-22. New Zealand established a 14-2 run in the third quarter to overcome, but was kept up by Australia on Rohanee Cox's free throws, 59-all, with 24 seconds to go to the buzzer. Noni Wharemate hit a jumper to make it 61-59. The foul in offense buried Australia's hope to turn the table as New Zealand won 63-59.
Despite the victory, New Zealand ranks at the bottom with 1W-4L. Australia will compete with Cuba for the bronze medal.
