Day 5: CHN loses final tuneup, NZL first win

(Beijing, April 25) The USA halted host China's four-game winning streak 86-61 last night in the final tuneup of the "Good Luck Beijing" CNPC 2008 Women's Basketball International Invitational Tournament. In other matches, New Zealand captured its first win by beating Australia 63-59 while Cuba clinched a berth in the top four after bearing down Korea 78-66.

Cuba 78, Korea 66

Yakelyn Plutin Tizon scored a game-high of 24 points and tore down 12 rebounds and Yayma Boulet Peillon also gained a double-double of 18 points and 17 boards in the win for Cuba, who finished with 3W-2L in the round robin games.

Kim Jung Eun led the Koreans with 14 points while Choi Youn Ah added 10 in the defeat for Korea, who suffered three consecutive losses and ended with 1W-4L.

Cuba outrebounded Korea 50-29 and made 22 out of 25 from the free throw line.

Yakelyn Plutin Tizon's aggressive inside play lifted Cuba to a 21-15 lead after the first quarter. Korea came closer on Kim Jung Eun's fast breaks, trailing 38-34 at half time. Cuba maintained the cushion after three periods and made it 78-66 for the win.

USA 86, China 61

The USA halted host China's four-game winning streak 86-61 last evening in their last round robin game.

Lisa Leslie scored game high 26 points in the win. Her teammate Sylvia Fowles posted a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds for USA.

Bian Lan led China with 14 points. Chen Xiaoli had 13 and Miao Lijie added 9. Center Chen Nan got only 8 for China.

Lisa Leslie and Sylvia Fowles came out strong in the paint to lead USA to a 21-17 advantage after the first quarter. The increasing turnovers in the last three minutes made the host team down 43-35 at half time. China suffered a low field goal percentage in the third quarter and the US players set up a double-figure advantage with three minutes remaining in the period and made 63-48 to the final quarter. USA called off most of its starters with four minutes to go to the buzzer and won the match 86-61.

After this match, both sides ended with 4W-1L and the gold-medal match is slated for Saturday evening.

NZL 63, AUS 59

New Zealand, who had lost four games in a row, captured its first win in the tournament, beating Australia 63-59.

Jilian Harmon posted a double-double with game high 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Angela Marino was the other New Zealand player reaching double figures, 12 points. Despite the victory, New Zealand ranks at the bottom with 1W-4L.

Australia outrebounded New Zealand 43-36, but made only 30 percent shooting from the field. Rohanee Cox scored 12 points while Natalie Porter added 10 in the loss for Australia, who finished with 2W-3L. The Aussies will compete with Cuba for the bronze medal Saturday afternoon.
